Tony Scott founded the Marin County Track Club in 2016 with the goal of creating a close-knit community of like-minded runners that would eventually have global reach.

Tony believes there is more, much more, to coaching than simply writing programs and standing trackside shouting splits.  It is about realizing a philosophy that integrates running into our daily lives.  It is about personal and professional growth and fulfilment.  It is about continuous and lifelong learning and realizing your potential, and as a coach, Tony is with you every step of the way through bad times and good.

Growing up, Tony was one of those hyper-active kids. He did judo, soccer, running and was a rock-climbing instructor from the age of 14. Through perseverance and passion he excelled at them all.  But it was only on joining the Royal Air Force Regiment that he found his “calling”… boxing.  Tony went on to box for the Royal Air Force and become a two time welterweight champion.  Boxing shares a lot in common with running with both disciplines being individual pursuits that demands mastering the mind and body.  The world’s best boxers do a lot of running and on moving to New York running became Tony’s calling.  It was in New York that he would meet Olympian, John Henwood (NZL) in 2008 and who would be Tony’s coach from 2012 – 2016 where Tony notched up over 60 PRs.

Since 2016 Tony’s primary focus has been on coaching for road and trail races.  Athlete successes include steering Eddie Owens to 1st place in the 2022 Dipsea trail race and earning a spot on Team USA’s trail world championships team in 2021 and 2023, guiding Sarah Kiptoo to victory in the 2016 California International Marathon in 2:31:20, her second fastest ever, and David Bett to second place in the 2019 Carlsbad 5k.  In 2018 he steered Bedan Karoki to second place in the 2018 Buenos Aires Half Marathon.  Bedan and the first-place finisher were the first men to go under 60 minutes in the half marathon on South American soil.  Bedan would go on to place 9th in the Chicago marathon in 2018.

Tony’s training philosophy is crafted from his boxing career, as a runner coached by Henwood and from the coaching insights gained from 1984 Boston Marathon champion, Olympic bronze medalist and Arthur Lydiard protege, Lorraine Moller from New Zealand.  “The key to realizing one’s athletic potential demands combining the physical and psychological, the body and mind and having someone with you every step of the journey.”

Having pushed his own body and mind to its limits in training and competition, having studied the science of running, having learned from world class coaches, experts and athletes, Tony continues to expand his knowledge and finetune his training philosophy, keeping his athletes healthy, happy and high achieving.  “Ensuring athletes stay strong in body and mind, injury free and mentally prepared for the rigors of training and racing is key.  My training approach is about the appliance of science. It is built on principles of perseverance, passion and progress.  I get no greater pleasure than seeing my athletes realize their athletic and life goals.”

Outside of running, Tony loves to spend time with his wife and daughter, typically doing a range of outdoor activities for fun.

As a teenager, Tony captained his school’s canoeing team in the inter-schools’ white water canoeing championships, where they were crowned the champions.  Tony also recorded the fastest individual split time during the tournament by any of the competing canoeists.
